The Black Box Planetary gearbox is a gear reduction unit that fits between your existing transmission and transfer case. The Black Box can be shifted between 1:1 high range for highway duty and a deep 2.72:1 gear reduction when in low range. The Black Box is designed for the 4x4 enthusiast who is seeking significantly more slow speed control than currently available. What Advantages Will Lower Gearing Offer? It's not only the benefit of conquering obstacles where you will find the Black Box advantageous. With the added gearing you can apply torque smoothly, with less stress and shock loads placed on your drivetrain. This means less repairs. You will have the ability to decide exactly how fast (or slow) to approach obstacles, rather than bouncing down the trail. This means less body damage. There are three different methods to acheive the low gearing and control that you desire: 1) You can re-gear your differentials to a lower ratio. This means that you'll be buzzing high RPM's on the highway, and still only gain about a 25% lower gear ratio overall. 2) You can install a lower ratio gearset into your existing transfer case. There are quite a few kits out there that will allow you to re-gear you current transfer case to a deeper ratio when in low range. The problem with this solution is that it does not offer any gear selection. You are given the choice of either 1:1 high range, or a very deep transfer case low range, with nothing between. 3) You can install dual transfer cases or an underdrive unit such as the Black Box. This will allow you to shift between high range, low range, and double low range. For highway duty you can leave both the Black Box and your current transfer case in high range for better RPM's and mileage. In situations such as sand and mud for example, where a little more wheelspin is desirable, you can put either the Black Box or your transfer case into low range. For rockcrawling and technical trails shift both the Black Box and your transfer case into low range for the ultimate in traction and control. It is the gear selection that the Black Box provides that makes it the clear cut choice. Gear selection is #1 when it comes to building a vehicle that can conquer all types of situations and terrain.
So you've decided that gear selection is right for you. Great. Now you need to decide which route is best for you. Dual transfer cases such our 203/205 or 203/D300 kits are a great option when you have both cases on hand, easy transmission compatiblity for the 203 and the wheelbase to support them. However, for many this isnt a realistic option. The Black Box offers many advantages over conventional dual transfer cases: Length: At only 7.25" long the Black Box saves length, and leads to better driveshaft angles over longer dual transfer case options. Size: At Only 7.9" in diameter, the Black Box gives more room between your frames rails for exhaust routing and will not hang low. Weight: The Black box is only 47lbs, less than than half the weight of a 203 reduction box and adaptor. Gear Ratio: The Black Box is geared at a low 2.72:1 ratio, 26% lower than the low range of a NP203 range box. Ready To Rock: The Black Box comes delivered to you preassembled, ready to be bolted between your transmission and transfer case. The Black Box holds a strong competitive advantage over other underdrive units on the market today:
At NorthWest FabWorks, we're not going to produce a product unless we're sure that we have the best available. The Black Box is no exception. Heavy Duty Roller Bearing Shaft Support: The Black Box is the Only Planetary Gear Box that has a bearing support at both the input and output of the mainshaft. Our competitors rely on the input splines and bearing of your transfer case to both center and support all the output load of the gearbox. Not here. We use a massive 80mm roller bearing at the output of the Black Box. The BlackBox uses a 4340 Mainshaft that has been through-hardened for the ultimate in shaft strength. Looking for a weak link? Look elsewhere. Fixed Endplay Our Black Box Mainshafts are fixed in place with enplay set from the factory. Our competitors provide aluminum spacer 'pucks' to control endplay. They specify acceptable endplay up to 0.200", meaning a 40% loss in input bearing contact. This can lead to catastrophic gear failure. The Blackbox has 100% bearing contact 100% of the time. Hard Anodized Black All of our Black Box Gear Boxes are hard anodized black, giving a lasting constistant surface finish. All current pre-production photos are clear anodized for photo clarity. ![]() Billet Input Retainers All of our Black Box planetary gear boxes include billet input retainers. We do not re-use factory cast NVG231/241 retainers. Our retainers parts are purpose built specifically for the Black Box 360 Degree Clocking The Black Box Will allow you to rotate your transfer case 360 degrees. There is no limitations on orientation with the Black Box. The Black Box Has A Wide Range Of Compatibility.
The Black Box is most directly compatible with domestic transmissions and transfer cases that share the common '6 bolt round' transfer case pattern. These applications will allow integration of the Black Box with few or no adaptors required. We also offer adaptors to mate to 'Figure 8' NP205's among others. We Offer input spline counts of 21, 23, 27, 29, 31, and 32. The Total Black Box Kit Includes The Following: 1 Mounting Ring and Foot 1 Shifter Assembly (Cable) 12 Mounting Studs 2 Mounting Gaskets Retail Price: $1599.00 USD | |
